Summary: Buying directly from associated farmers at farmer's markets,
supports small, organic, and family farms, and affords one
the opportunity to select from the finest quality foods
available.
Author's statement:
Our food today is often grown with harmful pesticides,
growth hormones and genetic manipulation. The lion-share of
the market supports this, while a growing minority is trying
to change the way food is produced.
In Europe, genetic manipulation of food is prohibited.
The focus there, is on producing quality foods without
shortcuts. Large corporations, looking for maximum profits,
lose sight of quality, instead produce genetically altered
versions of foods focused on specific traits. Grown for size
and pesticide tolerance, food grown with growth hormones and
gene tweeking are large and colorful foods with little in
terms of flavor.
Small and family farms specialize in foods with focused
appeal. Often featuring organic and nutrient rich farming
techiniques. When these small and natural poducers get
together at a farmer's market, it is a convenient way to get
the very best tasting organic food, without growing it
yourself. At these markets, the profits all go to the grower,
not some national distributor with stock market concerns.
Feed yourself and the organic and small farm industry,
shop at farmer's markets.
