Summary:
Be kind. But do not feel badly about protecting
yourself and the people you care about from dangerous
situations
by asserting yourself, even if it means being rude.
Author's statement:
There are many guidelines that emphasize the importance
of being kind. Being friendly and open to new people
is wonderful. But I am still learning how not to feel
obligated to be polite in threatening situations. It
is the right thing to do to change seats if the person
sitting next to you on the bus is looking at you funny,
or to hang up the phone on unwanted calls. It is the
right thing to do to not volunteer information you
consider private, and to call the police if someone is
bothering you. Being prejudice and close minded is
bad. But being safe protects you and your loved ones
and is the right thing to do. |
