Summary: Clean clothing shows a certain level of self-respect and
respect for those around us. It is healthful and doesn't
pollute social breathing areas and add to visual blight.
Author's statement:
Challenging social mores can be a liberating activity
for the individual and for society, but certain things are
just not cool, like stinky, grimey, dirty clothing. Fashion
is a hard thing to dictate - people all have different
tastes - most would agree that dirty clothes aren't socially
acceptable.
Hippy and punk cultures experimented with dirty
exteriors, with little success. Hygiene neglect as a
lifestyle says more about a person than basic political or
anarchistic view points, it raises questions of physical,
emotional and mental health.
Many of us may wear a shirt, or a pair of jeans multiple
times without washing them, but if clothing is worn for weeks
or months without being cleaned, it can become a serious
personal and public health issue. The co-worker who wears the
same shirt for a week may have some personal problems that
may need to be addressed. When odor begins to become a
problem, other's right to fresh, clean air is not being
respected.
A person may bathe regularly, but if the clothing
remains dirty, little has been achieved. Clean clothing shows
a certain level of self-respect and respect for those around
us. Wearing clean clothing works towards this end.
