They are harmful to the environment because they pollute the air and water of their local environment with their wastes. Factory farmed birds are fed the cheapest forms of protien such as diseased animal remains and fecal matter plus synthetic vitamins, wormers and antibiotics to keep yields up and production costs low. The farms are controlled by huge faceless corporations. The production scale on the industrial scale thus dehumanizing workers and allowing cruelty to the birds. The birds are kept in a high stress environment all of their lives this may profoundly effect the eating quality of the meat and eggs. Pastured chicken, on the other hand, are allowed free access to the out of doors and are given ample living room. Being out doors means much cleaner and healthier living conditions so these birds do not need antibiotics or any other drugs in their diet to keep them healthy and producing. Pasture poultry farms use the poultry to enhance fertility of the soil and thus the chickens do not pollute the air or water with their wastes. Pasture poultry is always done on a small local scale so when you buy pastured poultry products you are supporting a local and usually organic farm. Organic farms work best if there are animals raised on them as a part of the crop rotation and pastured poultry works exceedingly well on a lot of farms. |
