0 points - I throw the toner cartridge away. (Which pollutes the environment because of the plastic and the toner residue inside). 5 points - I rinse the toner out of the cartridge with water and pour it down the drain, then recycle the container.(Toner blackens an enormous amount of water, taxing water filtration, it is considered a pollutant. 30 points - I put toner cartridges in the recycling bin. (Because of the toner residue, the cartridge can't be recycled in the normal manner).
60 points - I save the toner cartridges in a box in the garage, I intend to have them refilled sometime. 80 points - I put my toner cartridges to other uses when they are empty. 100 points - I have all of my toner cartridges refilled for reuse.

Summary: Saving toner cartridges for refilling saves having to send the unrecyclable plastic to a landfill. They are filled with enough remaining toner residue to stain anything you've got.
