I just thought I'd post a note in honor of Ellery Chun, who was
the first to produce and market the Hawaiian shirt. In the
beginning Hawaiians didn't even wear shirts but the missionaries
had them wearing plain brown shirts called palakas in no time.
The women were ordered to wear plain shapeless dresses they
called (and are still calling) muumuus. As the Americans began
arriving in the 20's, local tailors began making palakas with a
little more flair and then along came Mr. Chun.
He set up shop and began mass producing the Aloha shirt and
the rest is history.
This one is for you Mr. Chun. Thanks for the memories.
