Police Unity Ride

To my fellow citizens and officers,

In May 2005 I will again have the privilege, as a member of the Law Enforcement community, to ride in the Police Unity Tour. The Police Unity Tour is a 300 mile bicycle ride from Ground Zero in New York City to Washington D.C. to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Dedicated in 1991 the Memorial includes the names of all law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Much of the money raised by the Police Unity Tour is used to operate the Memorial and Visitor Center, soon to be a Police Museum. Last year California lost 13 officers, killed in the line of duty.

As a member of the Police Unity Tour, Southern California Chapter, I am required to raise funds to participate in the ride. All donations would be greatly appreciated. The Police Unity Tour is a non-profit, 501 C (3) organization, Tax ID# 22-3530541.

Donations to the Police Unity Tour, Inc. may be mailed to:

Officer Daniel Steinberg
Los Angeles School Police Department
Valley Division
9229 S. Haskell Avenue
North Hills, California 91344
[818] 893-6423

Please make checks payable to:
The Police Unity Tour, Inc.
If you have any questions please contact me.

Sincerely,
Daniel Steinberg

Fight Crime: Invest In Kids California

Police Chief Kerstein, joined by Los Angeles City Police Chief Bratton, Los Angeles County Sheriff Baca and San Fernando Police Chief Alba, speaks at news conference regarding the severe shortage of after-school funding for high schools.

The press conference, held at Monroe High School in the San Fernando Valley on the morning of January 29, 2004, focused on the shortage of California after-school programs for high school students. The event was sponsored by Fight Crime: Invest In Kids California, a bipartisan, nonprofit anti-crime organization that was founded in 1996. The organization is led by more than 2,000 police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors, victims of violence and leaders of police officer associations.

Evidence from police departments in California's largest cities shows that in the hour after the school bell rings, turning millions of children and teens out on the streets with neither constructive activities nor adult supervision, violent juvenile crime suddenly triples and the prime time for juvenile crime begins. On school days, the prime time for violent juvenile crime is from 3 PM to 6 PM. The crimes that occur then are serious and violent, including murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults.

More information regarding Fight Crime: Invest in Kids can be found on their Web site here.
