BIOGRAPHY
Elton soon became frustrated with the band and began searching for other groups to join. He failed an audition for Liberty Records, but was given a number of Bernie Taupin penned lyrics to work on. He started writing music for the lyrics and the two began corresponding by mail. The pair met six months later, and so began one of the most enduring and successful musical partnerships of the 20th Century.
Following a record-breaking run of concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1988, Elton auctioned off all of his stage costumes. This marked a turning point in the singer's life, and subsequent years saw him conquer his addictions and devote much time to charity fundraising. In 1991 he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and announced that he would donate all royalties from his single sales to AIDS research.
He and Taupin went on to sign a record-breaking publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music in 1992 for an estimated $39 million.
Since meeting his long-term partner, David Furnish, Elton continues to devote his time to touring and fundraising for his AIDS charity.
