Singer and actress, born in Los Angeles, California, USA, the daughter of Vincente Minnelli and Judy Garland. She first appeared on screen in her mother's film In the Good Old Summertime (1949), and became the youngest-ever actress to win a Tony award, for Flora, the Red Menace (1965). On television and in cabaret, her vocal talents and emotional rendition of plaintive songs earned comparisons with her mother. Dramatic roles in such films as Charlie Bubbles (1967), The Sterile Cuckoo (1969, Tony Award), and Tell Me that You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970) revealed her as a skilled portrayer of social outcasts. She won an Oscar for Cabaret (1972), and a television special, Liza with a Z (1972), confirmed her many talents. Subsequent dramatic appearances include New York, New York (1977), Stepping Out (1991), and the Arthur films with Dudley Moore. Her work for television includes West Side Waltz (1995) and the comedy sitcom Arrested Development (2003). In 2002 she married her fourth husband, producer David Gest, but the marriage ended acrimoniously the next year.
