Paul McCartney Biography
Paul McCartney had the most commercially successful solo career of all the Beatles. He began pursuing outside projects while the band was still together. In 1966 he wrote the instrumental soundtrack to The Family Way. McCartney also worked with other artists, producing the Bonzo Dog Band, Badfinger, and Mary Hopkin. His first solo album of songs, 1970's McCartney, was released two weeks before the Beatles' Let It Be. Prior to the album's release, McCartney announced that the Beatles were breaking up. The album was recorded at home with McCartney playing all the instruments. It topped the US charts and reached #2 in the UK. McCartney featured one of his best and most popular songs, "Maybe I'm Amazed." It was followed by a non-LP single, "Another Day", which reached the US and UK Top 5. His follow up album, Ram, was credited to Paul and his wife Linda, and was recorded with a band. The album received mixed reviews due to its light lyrical content, but is now thought of as one of McCartney's best solo albums. "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" topped the US charts.

McCartney's next album and subsequent material throughout the 1970s would be released under the band name Wings. The only permanent member other than McCartney and his wife was former Moody Blues' singer/guitarist Denny Laine. Their 1971 album Wild Life preceded three 1972 non-LP UK hit singles, "Give Ireland Back To The Irish," "Mary Had A Little Lamb," and "Hi, Hi, Hi"/"C Moon." The following year, Red Rose Speedway featured the US #1 and UK #9 hit "My Love." McCartney's theme song to the James Bond movie Live and let Die was a Top 10 hit in the US and UK. 1975's Band On The Run was recorded only with Linda and Laine and is considered his best post-Beatles album. The title song and "Jet" were both US and UK Top 10 hits, the former topping the UK charts. Wings' big singles and albums continued for the rest of the decade with "Junior's Farm;" Venus And Mars featuring "Listen To What The Man Said;" Wings At The Speed Of Sound featuring "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In;" London Town featuring "With A Little Luck;" and "Goodnight Tonight." 1977's "Mull of Kintyre," became the biggest-selling British single to date, selling over 2.5 million copies.

He returned to solo work following Wing's 1979 album Back To The Egg. McCartney had hits with "Wonderful Christmastime," "Coming Up," and "Waterfalls", the latter two from the self recorded McCartney II. The success and high quality of "Coming Up" is said to have inspired John Lennon to go back into the studio after a five year hiatus. Following Lennon's murder, McCartney recorded Tug Of War with Beatles' produced George Martin. It was his best reviewed album since Band On The Run and featured the US and UK chart topping duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony And Ivory." In 1983 McCartney sang on "The Girl is Mine," the first single from Michael Jackson's Thriller. McCartney and Jackson collaborated again on the huge hit, "Say Say Say," from the Pipes Of Peace album. 1984's Give My Regards To Broad Street featured the US and UK Top 10 hit "No More Lonely Nights." 1986's Press to Play was critically and commercially under whelming. On 1989's Flowers in the Dirt, McCartney co-wrote some songs with Elvis Costello. The album received his best reviews since Tug Of War. They also wrote songs for Costello's Spike, including the hit "Veronica."

His subsequent albums would mostly receive lukewarm critical and commercial response, but McCartney's tours would be some of the most massively successful ever. His 1991 MTV Unplugged concert was the first to be released as an album and it was a hit. 1997's Flaming Pie was hailed as one of his best and debuted an #2 in the US and UK. McCartney also would embark of some varied projects including: three classical albums, Liverpool Oratorio, Standing Stone, and Working Classical; an techno album under the name The Fireman; and the experimental Liverpool Sound Collage.
