You are correct in your assumption. Hemp is durable and I have had no problem with washing it in the machine, however, depending on the handmade part it could ruin it if it was hand stitched or stitched with thread that might shrink. As always use a gentle soap like castille or woolite in cool water and don't ring it out to dry- just roll it in a big towel to remove most of the water and lay it flat to dry.
