With the M:I-2 soundtrack, Metallica goes mainstream. They
will probably continue to live high on the hog until a tour
bus rolls over another one of them.
Do you really think that music is moving toward web-based
concerts? If TV didn't do that for the industry then why would
the internet? MTV is product marketing. Music is a product that
we want to carry around with us, I can't see that changing.
There is a difference between music you've downloaded and burned
onto a cd and the product you get in the store. It is the
cool packaging and that is what the 12 - 25 year old kids want.
So until ol' Metallica finally "fades to black", I think they
will making the bulk of their money from album sales. But they
could be less greedy about their approach. Haven't they learned
any lessons from Fugazi or even Pearl Jam?
